EON-XR – Exploring the platform

At Ciberimaginario, we are currently testing several tools capable of creating XR environments through lightweight production workflows. As part of our analysis, the first platform we are exploring is EON-XR, a tool that enables the intuitive design and development of immersive experiences.

To start working with it, users must register on the platform and download the appropriate application according to their operating system.

To create a scene, we have to click on “Create Xperience”, using 3D assets through Sketchfab. The next step involves scaling the object according to how it should be experienced within the environment. Based on our initial testing, the experience is more accessible from a mobile device such as an iPad rather than through a web browser. As explained in the tutorial videos on YouTube, using a tablet provides greater freedom of movement, allowing users to walk around the object more naturally.

At this stage, we are exploring how to create the experience in Augmented Reality (AR) mode, as it is more intuitive and allows users to enjoy the experience more naturally and immersively on an iPad than on a computer. Additionally, the tool offers the possibility of integrating Artificial Intelligence into the experience design process, enhancing its creative and educational potential.

After several tests, our conclusion is that EON‑XR, while technically powerful and packed with features, is not very intuitive for designing any kind of experience. Constant changes between versions, renaming of key buttons and tabs, and the slowness of the web platform make smooth navigation difficult. Additionally, it’s not possible to export projects as a .zip file to upload to our own servers, meaning that all experiences created require users to download the official app to access them—something not everyone will want to do, and which significantly limits its effectiveness. The documentation and tutorials also seem outdated, and these frequent changes make learning and interacting with the tool more complicated, negatively impacting the user experience (UX). For these reasons, we believe that in many cases it’s more practical to use other tools, especially since the need to use the official app is, in our view, the main obstacle.
