Gustavo Marfia

Gustavo Marfia earned a degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Pisa (2003) and a PhD in Computer Science from UCLA’s Network Research Lab (2009). He has collaborated with major companies and research centers including Technogym, Yoox, Microsoft Research, STMicroelectronics, Siemens, and Los Alamos National Labs. In 2019, he founded and now leads the Virtual and Augmented Reality Lab (VARLAB) at the University of Bologna, dedicated to the design and evaluation of distributed and immersive environments across multiple departments and campuses.

Under his direction, VARLAB has secured over €1 million in public and private funding and engages more than a dozen researchers in areas spanning extended reality and artificial intelligence. Author of over 130 scientific papers, his research covers computer systems, networks, multimedia, XR, and AI. He has been an associate professor since 2019 and will become a full professor in November 2023.
